4K, MP4, MKV or MP3: choosing the right quality and format
"Quality" when downloading video is really three independent decisions — resolution, container, and audio handling. Getting them right saves gigabytes and pointless re-encodes. Here's what each choice means and when to make it.
Three separate decisions
- Resolution (144p–2160p): how many pixels. The main driver of file size.
- Container (MP4, MKV, WebM): the file "box" that holds video and audio streams. It doesn't change picture quality by itself.
- Stream handling (keep vs. re-encode): whether your tool merges YouTube's separate video and audio streams losslessly or converts them (which costs quality and time).
Choosing a resolution

The honest rule: match resolution to the content and the screen it will play on. A conference talk at 4K is mostly a bigger file with the same pixels of interest; fast sports at 360p is a blur either way.
MP4 vs. MKV vs. WebM
Containers are boxes, not picture quality. The practical differences:
- MP4 — the most compatible box. Plays on almost every device, TV, and editor out of the box. Pick it unless you have a reason not to (YDM's default).
- MKV — the flexible box. Handles more stream types, which sometimes means it's the only container that can hold the exact highest-quality streams YouTube offers without conversion.
- WebM — the web-native box. Great software support on computers, patchier on TVs and consoles.
The key quality fact: changing containers should be a copy operation, not a conversion. If your downloader re-encodes video just to make an MP4, you lose quality twice and burn CPU. YDM merges streams with stream copy — no re-encode — and only converts when you explicitly ask for MP3 audio.
Audio-only: when MP3 is right
For music, podcasts, and lectures, downloading video is wasting 95% of the file. Two options:
- Best audio keeps the original audio stream untouched — ideal if your player handles it (nearly all do).
- MP3 is the one case where a deliberate re-encode is worth it: universal compatibility with older car stereos, DAPs, and editors. Use it when you need the format, not by default.
Sensible presets
- Everyday viewing: 360p or 720p, MP4. (This is YDM's default profile — one click, no thinking.)
- Big-screen content: 1080p, MP4; MKV if the tool says 1080p+ needs it.
- Archive/editing master: Best quality, MKV — highest streams, zero re-encoding.
- Music/podcasts: best audio; MP3 only for finicky players.
Quick questions
Why does "best quality" sometimes only come as MKV?
YouTube stores its highest resolutions as separate video and audio streams in specific codec combinations. Not all of them fit an MP4 box without conversion — so a tool that refuses to re-encode your video (correctly) will offer MKV for those. Choose MKV; don't pay a re-encode for a container.
Does a bigger container always mean bigger file?
No. File size is driven by the streams inside (resolution, codec, bitrate, duration), not the box. An MKV and an MP4 holding the same streams weigh the same.
What if my chosen quality isn't available?
Every video has a ceiling — a 2014 clip may only exist up to 720p. Good downloaders show what each video actually offers at analyze time and fall back gracefully; YDM lists available profiles per job rather than failing obscurely.
